About the Class

Cosmetology is a 3 year program at the Limestone County Career Technical Center in Athens, AL, it is purely designed to get you to State Board. State board is the test that we have to take in order to get our cosmetology license.

In this class we learn:

  • In the book: Whole first Semester of first year

  • Hair cuts: Second Semester of first year

  • Permanent Waving and Chemical Relaxing

  • Braiding and Dreadlocks

  • Hair Coloring

  • Facials

  • Make-up (regular and air-brush)

  • Manicures (Inc. Regular polishing and acrylic)

  • Pedicures

The first kit is approximately $370 for the book and all of the haircutting and styling supplies

The second kit is approximately $150 for all of the manicure, make-up supplies and color supplies.

Third year is the state board prep year, you will receive 4 mannequins at a price approximately $175.

As of now, we are doing assimilated workplace, meaning we work like a Real Salon. We do take clients, Wednesday through Friday, we do have a uniform on those days which is black scrubs. We have 2 managers and the rest of the students are considered staff members, Mrs. Black, the instructor, is considered the Salon Owner . We all have chores at the end of the day (maintaining a clean work environment). We also clock in every time we come into class.

The first semester of the first year is all bookwork, and there is a lot, so you have to stay very dedicated. You must make a 70% or above in your first semester to qualify to come back for the second semester. (that counts for every year with every report card or you will not qualify for state board)

The second semester is when you will enter the salon and begin working on the mannequins. You will start with women's cuts and then move on to men's and so forth.
